March 7th we celebrate the birthday of Piet Mondrian! 🟥

Born in 1872 in the Netherlands, Piet Mondrian was a Dutch painter known for founding the De Stijl movement and for his innovations in Abstract Art.

Mondrian studied at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam from 1892 to 1897, painting in a naturalistic style influenced by Dutch Impressionism and Symbolism. However, his work soon revealed a growing interest in abstraction. In 1911, exposure to numerous art movements particularly Cubism, with the works of Picasso and Braque, influenced him, leading to his move to Paris. His "Still Life with Gingerpot" series marked his transition from representational art to structured compositions of geometry and balance.

Stranded in the Netherlands during World War I, Mondrian refined his artistic philosophy, developing Neoplasticism, a style based on primary colors, black, white, and a grid of vertical and horizontal lines. In 1917, he co-founded De Stijl, advocating for a universal aesthetic that extended to architecture and design. However, disagreements over artistic principles led him to leave the movement in 1925.

By the late 1920s, Mondrian gained international recognition. His works were featured in major exhibitions, including a 1932 retrospective at the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. In 1931, he joined the Abstraction-Creation group, solidifying his role in shaping modern abstract art.

With the rise of World War II, Mondrian moved to London in 1938 and later to New York in 1940. The city's energy and jazz culture inspired his "Boogie Woogie", a series of dynamic grids and energetic rhythms. His first solo exhibition in 1942 introduced his work to a new generation of artists.

Mondrian passed away in 1944 in New York City, but his legacy lives on as his artistic vision laid the foundation for movements such as Minimalism and modern graphic design. His works today are housed in major institutions worldwide, including the National Gallery of Art in Washington, and the Tate Gallery in London.

Gustav Klimt's " Allegory of Sculpture," c1896, was created to commemorate the 25th anniversary of what is now the MAK (Museum of Applied Arts, Vienna). This watercolor reflects the symbolic themes characteristic of his early work. At the center, a nude female figure embodies sculpture, adorned with intricate jewelry, including a snake bracelet and Hellenistic-style hair ornaments. In her left hand, she delicately holds a Victoria figure poised atop a globe, crowned with a laurel wreath.

Surrounding her are sculptural motifs from antiquity, such as Boy with Thorn, Athena Parthenos, and Juno Ludovisi, the latter seated in a position of prominence. Klimt later returned to this theme in Allegorien. Neue Folge (Allegories. New Series, 1897), where reinterpreted the allegory of sculpture with a more modern and fragmented approach, moving beyond traditional classical influences.
