Jacques-Émile Blanche was a French painter and portrait artist who was active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. He is best known for his portrait paintings, which were characterized by their sensitive and expressive handling of light and colour.

Blanche was born in Paris in 1861 and was the son of the influential French psychiatrist Émile Blanche. He studied art at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. After completing his studies, Blanche travelled extensively throughout Europe, including to Italy and Spain, where he was exposed to the art of the Renaissance and the Baroque periods.

He was particularly drawn to the work of the Spanish painter Diego Velázquez, and his own work was influenced by the realism and psychological depth of Velázquez's portraits.

Blanche created numerous portraits of prominent figures in the art world, including writers, artists, and politicians. He was known for his ability to capture the character and personality of his subjects, and his portraits are considered among the finest of his time.

In addition to his work as a painter, Blanche was also a writer and art critic. He published several books on art and literature. He was a friend and collaborator of many leading figures in the Parisian art world, including Marcel Proust, Auguste Rodin, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.
