Vasily Perov was a Russian painter born in 1834 in a small town called Tobolsk in Siberian Russia. After graduating from Alexander Stupin's art school in Arzamas, he was admitted to the Moscow School of Painting, Sculpture and Architecture, where he studied under several well-known Russian artists.
During his studies, Perov received several awards for his works, which were presented to the Imperial Academy of Arts and allowed him to travel abroad in 1862, paid for by the state.
Perov travelled through Western Europe, especially Germany, and then to Paris, where he created many paintings that captured everyday life and life on the streets.
After his return to Russia, Perov created some of his notable artworks including, Easter Procession in a Village, A Scene at the Railroad, and "The Troika," which depicts a group of horses pulling a carriage through a snowy landscape. The painting is a quintessential example of Russian folk life and is considered to be one of Perov's most iconic works.

Vasily Perov received the title of academician in 1866 and eventually become a Professor at the Moscow School of Arts in 1871.
Perov was one of the founders of the "Peredvizhniki" (Wanderers) movement, a group of Russian artists who were committed to the principles of realism and who rejected the academic art of the day in favour of a more spontaneous, expressive style. The Wanderers held exhibitions of their work throughout Russia and were known for their social and political activism.
Throughout his career, Perov exhibited his work widely and received numerous accolades for his contributions to the development of Russian realism. He died from tuberculosis in 1882, at the age of 48.
