Art Movement: Expressionism, Orphism

August Macke was a German Expressionist painter who was born in Meschede, Germany in 1887. He became interested in art at a young age and decided to pursue it as a career. In 1906 he enrolled at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf, where he studied under Heinrich Nauen and Franz von Stuck. In 1911 Macke met two other artists, Wassily Kandinsky and Franz Marc, and the three became close friends and collaborators. They founded the group "Der Blaue Reiter" (The Blue Rider), which focused on Expressionist art. Macke became an active member of the group and contributed to several of their exhibitions.

Macke's works are characterized by bright, bold colours and expressive, dynamic compositions. He often depicted people in landscapes or urban settings, and his paintings often convey a sense of movement and energy. In addition to landscapes and figures, Macke also painted still lifes and portraits. Some of his most famous works include "The Garden," "Promenade," and "Farewell".
During his lifetime, Macke's work was exhibited in several important exhibitions, including the Sonderbund exhibition in Cologne in 1911 and the Armory Show in New York in 1913. Tragically, his career was cut short by his untimely death in 1914 at the age of 27, when he was killed in action in World War I.
Despite his short career, Macke is considered an important figure in the history of modern art. His works continue to be exhibited and admired around the world. They're represented in the collections of many major museums, including the Städel Museum in Frankfurt, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C.
