Gustave Doré was a French artist and illustrator born in 1832 in Strassburg (now known as Strasbourg), France.
A child prodigy, he created incredible drawings and his natural talent was evident at a very young age.
He began working as a caricaturist in Paris at the age of 15 and quickly gained fame for his detailed and dramatic wood engravings, which were used to illustrate books and other literary works.
Doré's illustrations were known for their expressiveness and attention to detail, and he became one of the most sought-after illustrators during his career. in 1861, he was named Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur by the French government.
Throughout his life, he created 10 000 and more illustrations for a number of works of literature, including "Don Quixote," "The Divine Comedy," "Grimms' Fairy Tales," and the works of Edgar Allan Poe. These illustrations are particularly well-known and are still frequently reproduced today.
In addition to his work as an illustrator, Doré was also a painter and sculptor. He exhibited his paintings and sculptures at the Paris Salon and received several awards for his work. Despite his success, Doré struggled with financial issues throughout his career and died in 1883 at the age of 51.
