Our La Belle Epoq's journey started some years ago with the encounter of a tremendously subtle and versatile "A.P." in his art studio somewhere in France.
We have been touched by his paintings' poetry, nostalgia and profoundness. His Art is rich, different, so attractive in its essence and dancing rhythms, the paint laid down with such a graceful yet fragile finesse.

He spoke about life, Arts, Greats from the Belle Epoque that he called his comrades, tragedies, sadness, but also a Divine light that accompanied him through his whole life.
While A.P. was narrating trouble events, we noticed a painting of an old man in the corner of his studio. The story of the painting was unbelievable, he painted it in 2016, yet the buyer did not show up to acquire and pay for the artwork.
Very disappointed and mad, A.P. repainted the canvas into white and performed another painting over it. Only a few years later, he decided to paint another version of his first original painting again.
And here we are, a sad old man near a fireplace grinding a coffee. At that time, we were already working on van Gogh's book for a couple of months, and we were dived into his oeuvre.
We were struck by the resemblance of feelings with Sorrowing Old Man (At Eternity's Gate), an oil painting by Vincent van Gogh.
Vincent painted it in 1890 in Saint-Rémy de Provence based on an early lithograph of a pencil drawing Worn Out, one of a series of studies by Adrianus Jacobus Zuyderland.
The painting was completed in early May 1890 at a time when van Gogh was convalescing from a severe relapse in his health.
An old man with a bald head is sitting on a yellow chair by his fire. There is a low fire in the grate. He is dressed in blue clothes. He is holding his head in his hands.

A.P. was surprised when we pointed out a certain resemblance of his "Old man sitting by the Fireplace" with van Gogh's Sorrowing Old Man.
He noted never having van Gogh's painting in his head while creating this painting.
Yet, somehow I feel the same kind of sadness, desperation and loneliness pouring out from both paintings.
You can judge by yourselves contemplating and comparing both of them. Here is A.P.’s painting.
