Ivan Fedorovich Choultsé

Ivan Fedorovich Choultsé’s works reflect the experience of the famous classics of Russian art of the 19th century and rightly belong to the best examples of Russian realistic landscape. Being a talented student of Konstantin Kryzhitsky and Arkhip Kuindzhi, he created paintings that were highly valued in the Russian Empire: so, among his admirers was the crowned Romanov family. However, Choultsé was forced to leave his homeland in the post-revolutionary years in order to become famous in the West.

Throughout his life, Ivan Choultsé was valued as a brilliant portraitist of nature. From 1906 to 1916, his works participated in regular exhibitions of the Academy of Arts and the Association of Artists in St. Petersburg and Moscow, they were acquired by many Russian collectors, among his connoisseurs was Carl Faberge. In the early 1920s, not accepting the October Revolution, Choultséwent to Paris, and his name in Russia was forgotten, but became widely known in Europe and America.

Choultsé was a singer of nature in his art: he praised its lands, sky, moon, plants. But the most important elements, the true heroes of his paintings were undoubtedly snow and water. The artistic world of Choultsé is a world without people or animals. His preferred type of a landscape is a winter view, frequently not Russian but Swiss. He was called a "magician of light" because of an almost magic realism of his paintings.

«He painted spectacular snow scenes in which the light seems to come from behind the canvas and glow. The critics scorned these pictures as photographic and callеd them non-art – but today this style of painting is called "magic-realism" and is much admired by critics and museum people.»
