January 28th - Jackson Pollock - Artist Birthday
Jackson Pollock American Born: January 28, 1912 Cody, Wyoming, United States Died: August 11, 1956 Springs, New York, United States An iconic figure who revolutionized modern art through his innovative and daring approach to painting, Jackson Pollock was an American artist born in 1912, in Cody, Wyoming. He was the youngest of five brothers in a family marked by instability and frequent moves across the western United States. His father, a surveyor, and his mother, an ambitious yet strict figure, had a profound effect on Pollock’s early life, which was often tumultuous. Artistic inspiration came from his older brother Charles, a painter, and early exposure to Native American art during travels with his father. Pollock moved to New York City in 1930 to study at the Art Students League under the American painter Thomas Hart Benton. Benton’s emphasis on dynamic, flowing compositions influenced Pollock’s early work, though Pollock quickly moved beyond his teacher’s representational style. The 1930s were a formative period for him, marked by employment with the WPA Federal Art Project and an increasing fascination with Mexican muralists like David Alfaro Siqueiros, whose experimental techniques informed Pollock's Approach to materials. Pollock's struggles with alcoholism began early in his career, and he sought therapy which encouraged his exploration of mythological and symbolic themes in his art. By the 1940s, Pollock developed his signature style, culminating in the “drip technique” that defined his most celebrated works. This method, in which he poured, dripped, and flung paint onto canvases spread on the floor, allowed him to engage physically with his art, creating bold, energetic compositions that defied conventional painting methods. The late 1940s and early 1950s marked Pollock’s peak. His “drip period” produced iconic works such as Autumn Rhythm and Convergence . Jackson Pollock ,Convergence c 1952 With support from his wife, artist Lee Krasner, and patron Peggy Guggenheim, Pollock rose to prominence, earning acclaim as a pioneer of Abstract Expressionism. Despite his success, Pollock faced growing criticism and struggled with self-doubt, leading to a return to darker, more somber works in the 1950s. Pollock’s personal life was fraught with difficulties. His relationship with Krasner became strained under the weight of his alcoholism and infidelity, and his creative output diminished. On August 11, 1956, Pollock died in a car accident near his home in Springs, New York, bringing a tragic end to his turbulent life at just 44 years old. Though his career was brief, Pollock’s influence on modern art has been profound. His wife Lee Krasner played a crucial role in preserving his legacy, managing his estate, and establishing the Pollock-Krasner Foundation to support emerging artists. Today, Pollock’s groundbreaking works are celebrated worldwide, solidifying his status as one of the most influential artists of the 20th century. January 17th - Paul Cézanne - Artist Birthday
Paul Cézanne French Born: January 19, 1839 Aix-en-Provence, France Died: October 22, 1906 Aix-en-Provence, France Paul Cézanne in 1899 A pioneering figure in the transition from 19th-century Impressionism to 20th-century modernism, Paul Cézanne was a French artist born on January 19th, 1839, in Aix-en-Provence, France. Cézanne was the son of a wealthy banker, a background that provided him with financial stability later in life but also contributed to early family tensions. His childhood was marked by a close friendship with Émile Zola, who later achieved literary fame as a novelist. This bond influenced Cézanne's intellectual development and exposed him to progressive ideas. The Artist_s Father, Reading _L_Événement Despite his father’s disapproval, Cézanne displayed an early passion for art. In 1862, after overcoming familial resistance, he was granted a modest allowance and moved to Paris to study art, where Zola had already settled. Immersing himself in the Parisian art world, Cézanne drew inspiration from the works of Eugène Delacroix, Gustave Courbet, and Édouard Manet. These influences shaped his artistic ambitions and directed him toward new, daring styles. A pivotal figure in Cézanne's artistic journey was Camille Pissarro, a leading Impressionist. Under Pissarro's guidance, Cézanne adopted the Impressionist approach to capturing natural light and transitioned from using somber tones to employing vibrant colors. During this period, he focused on depicting rural landscapes, villages, and farmland, embodying a growing connection to his native Provence. The Card Players, c1890–1892, Oil on canvas In the late 1870s and 1880s, Cézanne became increasingly reclusive, distancing himself from many of his Parisian contemporaries and retreating to Aix-en-Provence. His relationship with Pissarro, once a cornerstone of his development, diminished after 1882. In 1886, Cézanne suffered a profound personal blow when he perceived Zola’s novel as a veiled critique of his struggles. This led to the termination of their long-standing friendship. Four Bathers, c1880 That same year, following his father's death, Cézanne inherited a substantial fortune, granting him financial independence at 47. Cézanne’s later work had an immense impact on the trajectory of modern art. His innovative approach to form, color, and perspective inspired a generation of artists, including Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso, who famously acknowledged, “Cézanne is the father of us all.” Still Life with a Ginger Jar and Eggplants, c1893–1894, Oil on canvas Cézanne’s enduring legacy is his ability to bridge Impressionism and the avant-garde, shaping the following artistic movements. Hans Andersen Brendekilde: A Clear Winter Day in Hørby Mark – A Glimpse into Danish Social Realism ❄️🎨
Hans Andersen Brendekilde (1857–1942) was a Danish painter whose artistic journey bridged the raw realities of rural life with the idyllic charm of the countryside. His painting A Clear Winter Day, Hørby Mark on Funen captures the peaceful yet profound beauty of a Danish winter landscape, transporting the viewer into a serene and reflective moment. A Clear Winter Day, Hørby Mark on Funen Brendekilde: The Artist Who Painted Rural Life with Truth and Emotion Born in the small village of Brændekilde on the island of Funen, Brendekilde's early life was marked by hardship, much like the subjects he would later depict in his social realist paintings. A distant relation of Hans Christian Andersen, he, too, came from humble beginnings, and his empathy for the struggles of working-class people became the foundation of his artistic vision. Though trained as a sculptor, Brendekilde quickly shifted to painting, becoming one of Denmark’s first social realist artists. Along with his contemporary L.A. Ring, he depicted the daily lives of the rural poor with unfiltered honesty—whether they were laboring in the fields or facing personal tragedies in their homes. His work often carried a strong narrative, exposing the social injustices of the time. However, as his career evolved, his focus transitioned from raw social realism to the more romanticized and nostalgic portrayal of rural life. His later works, like A Clear Winter Day, Hørby Mark on Funen , showcase his admiration for nature and the peaceful countryside, blending his early realism with a growing impressionistic influence. A Clear Winter Day, Hørby Mark on Funen: A Tranquil Escape into the Danish Countryside In A Clear Winter Day, Hørby Mark on Funen , Brendekilde masterfully captures the crisp air, soft light, and tranquil charm of a snowy landscape. The scene is quiet and contemplative yet filled with the artist’s signature warmth. His use of delicate brushstrokes and subtle variations in colour gives the painting a sense of depth and serenity, making the viewer feel as if they are standing in the middle of this winter wonderland. This painting is a testament to Brendekilde’s ability to balance realism with emotion. The snow-covered fields, the barren trees standing stark against the winter sky, and the subtle interplay of light and shadow create a harmonious composition that draws the eye deeper into the canvas. It is not just a landscape; it is a moment frozen in time—an invitation to step into the quiet beauty of a Danish winter. The Legacy of Brendekilde: From Social Realism to Idyllic Rural Scenes Brendekilde’s work played a crucial role in developing Danish art, not just for his early social realism but also for his ability to evolve as an artist. His transition from depicting the hardships of rural life to celebrating its simple joys reflects a journey of both artistic and personal transformation. Akssamlere, Raagelund, 1883, Brandts. Children collecting leftover crops His influence extended beyond painting; he was also a pioneer in integrating the Arts and Crafts movement into Denmark, designing ornate, symbolist-inspired frames for his paintings. These frames often carried motifs that enriched the storytelling within his artworks, making them an integral part of the viewing experience. Fortrykt or Oppressed , 1887, Brandts Why Brendekilde’s Art Matters Today Today, Brendekilde’s paintings serve as a historical and artistic bridge between realism and impressionism. His ability to capture both beauty and the struggles of life in rural Denmark makes his work deeply human and timeless. Udslidt or Worn Out or The Martyr , 1889, Brandts Odense Whether you are drawn to its impressionistic charm or the deeper narrative behind Brendekilde’s artistic journey, this painting is a gem of Danish art history. 📍 Explore more masterpieces like this on our Pinterest page! 👉 La Belle Epoq Pinterest ✨ Follow us for more incredible art history insights and original artworks. 🔗 Let’s bring timeless art into the modern world. Ivan Fedorovich Choultsé
Ivan Fedorovich Choultsé’s works reflect the experience of the famous classics of Russian art of the 19th century and rightly belong to the best examples of Russian realistic landscape. Being a talented student of Konstantin Kryzhitsky and Arkhip Kuindzhi, he created paintings that were highly valued in the Russian Empire: so, among his admirers was the crowned Romanov family. However, Choultsé was forced to leave his homeland in the post-revolutionary years in order to become famous in the West. Throughout his life, Ivan Choultsé was valued as a brilliant portraitist of nature. From 1906 to 1916, his works participated in regular exhibitions of the Academy of Arts and the Association of Artists in St. Petersburg and Moscow, they were acquired by many Russian collectors, among his connoisseurs was Carl Faberge. In the early 1920s, not accepting the October Revolution, Choultséwent to Paris, and his name in Russia was forgotten, but became widely known in Europe and America. Lake in the Moonlight Ivan Choultsé Lake in the Moonlight Oil on canvas Choultsé was a singer of nature in his art: he praised its lands, sky, moon, plants. But the most important elements, the true heroes of his paintings were undoubtedly snow and water. The artistic world of Choultsé is a world without people or animals. His preferred type of a landscape is a winter view, frequently not Russian but Swiss. He was called a "magician of light" because of an almost magic realism of his paintings. «He painted spectacular snow scenes in which the light seems to come from behind the canvas and glow. The critics scorned these pictures as photographic and callеd them non-art – but today this style of painting is called "magic-realism" and is much admired by critics and museum people.» If you want to learn about his friend and co-founder of the Cubism Movement, Georges Braque, check out this video. October the 25th - Pablo Picasso - Artist Birthday
Pablo Picasso Spanish Born: October 25, 1881; Málaga, Spain Died: April 8, 1973; Mougins, France Art Movement: Cubism, Post-Impressionism, Surrealism On the night of October 25th 1881, in Malaga, Spain, an artist was born who is recognised as one of the most famous artists of all time. Pablo Diego José Francisco de Paula Juan Nepomuceno María de los Remedios Cipriano de la Santísima Trinidad Ruiz y Picasso, commonly known as Pablo Picasso, he revolutionised art, constantly inventing and breaking the rules that heavily influenced the 20th century and continued until now. Painter, sculptor, ceramist, innovator and pioneer of the Cubist movement, Pablo Picasso is considered a genius by many art amateurs and professionals.
The son of an Art Professor, Don José Ruiz y Blasco, Pablo was introduced to paintings from a very young age, and he showed remarkable prodigy talent from the beginning. At only eight years old, he painted his first work, "El Picador" in 1889. Picasso entered the School of Fine Arts in 1895 when his family moved to Barcelona, and two years later, he joined the Madrid Academy of Art. In 1899, Pablo started frequenting Els Quatre Gats ( The Four Cats), a café in Barcelona known as a lieu de rendez-vous for many artists like Antoni Gaudí, Santiago Rusiñol and Ramon Casas I Carbo. His visits allowed him to discover and exchange ideas with influential Modernist artists and bohemian intellectuals of his time.
Picasso visited Paris in 1900 for the first time and returned the following year to have his first exhibition at the Vollard Gallery at the age of 19.
Throughout his artistic life, Pablo Picasso regularly reinvented his style according to his influences and the vagaries of life. Thus, his artworks are sorted through different periods, including the Blue Period, the Rose Period, the African Period and the Cubist Period.
The Blue period is characterised by the use of blue shades and monochromatic tones for his paintings, showing the emotional depths of his personal life after going through loss, mourning, poverty and loneliness, especially after the death of his sister and close friend Carles Casagemas. "The Old Guitarist" is one of the most famous works from that era. In 1904, Picasso met Fernande Olivier, his partner and muse, from 1904 to 1909. It is believed his happy relationship with Fernande inspired him to change from a sombre to a warmer style: The Rose Period. Picasso used lighter tones, including pink and orange, representing Harlequins and circus performers.
The same year, Pablo Picasso met George Braque , and they innovated towards a new style, Cubist, influenced by Paul Cézanne and African sculptures. The main idea of Cubism was the rejection of the traditional belief that art should serve as an imitation of reality.
Picasso's first representation of this new period was "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon", painted in 1907.
In 1918, Picasso married his first wife, Olga Khokhlova, who was a dancer in the Ballets Russes and the mother of their son Paulo Picasso.
During the Spanish Civil War, Pablo Picasso accomplished a powerful anti-war monumental oil painting in response to the bombings in Guernica. Completed in 1937, this artwork is one of the most famous and impactful works worldwide because of its raw emotional representation of the atrocities during the war.
"Guernica" was presented at the Paris International Exposition in July 1937 at the Spanish Pavilion and Pablo Picasso famously quoted: "I have always believed and still believe that artists who live and work with spiritual values cannot and should not remain indifferent to a conflict in which the highest values of humanity and civilisation are at stake.”
In 1952, Picasso met his second wife, Jacqueline Roque and had multiple relationships with other women who all had an influence on his artistic style.
Pablo Picasso passed away on April 8th, 1973, in Mougins, France, leaving a collection of around 150,000 pieces, including paintings, engravings, illustrations, sculptures and ceramics. He was buried in Château de Vauvenargues near Aix-en-Provence, south of France. His legacy continues to influence and inspire generations of artists.

September the 25th - Mark Rothko - Artist Birthday
Mark Rothko American Born: September 25, 1903 Daugavpils, Latvia Died: February 25, 1970 New York, NY Art Movement: Abstract Art, Abstract Expressionism Born in 1903, Mark Rothko is an important figure in developing Post-war painting in the United States, also known as the New York School. Rothko was an abstract expressionist painter born in Dvinsk, Russia (current Latvia). He emigrated to Portland, Oregon, with his family in 1913 due to the fear of being drafted into the Imperial Russian army. In 1921, Mark Rothko obtained a scholarship to study at Yale University. Two years later, in 1923, Rothko moved to New York and began working in the N.Y. City garment district (a site known for fashion manufacturing and fashion design in the U.S.). His original plan was to become an engineer or attorney, but he was so fascinated by the Art world that he decided to pursue an artistic career. Mark Rothko studied briefly at the Art Students League under the American Cubist artist Max Weber. In 1925, Mark Rothko began studying at the Parsons School of Design, where he met Milton Avery under the teachings of Armenian painter Arshile Gorky, who heavily influenced his painting style. Rothko's work evolved throughout his career, and he experimented with different colour combinations and compositions. His art is often associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement, which emerged in New York City in the 1940s and included artists like Jackson Pollock, Willem de Kooning, and Franz Kline. Rothko's paintings are celebrated for their ability to convey complex emotional and spiritual experiences through colour and form. He believed his art could communicate universal truths and elicit deep emotional responses from viewers. His work is often seen as an exploration of the human condition, and he sought to create art that would engage viewers on a profound level. Mark Rothko's way of thinking was heavily influenced by "The Birth of Tragedy", a work by Friedrich Nietzsche, who stated that Greek mythology serves to prevent men from the terrors of ordinary mortal life. It also impacted his art, which aimed to fill the emptiness of modern men. "Without monsters and gods, art cannot enact a drama." Unfortunately, Mark Rothko struggled a lot with depression. He took his own life on February 25, 1970, at age 66, but he significantly impacted the world of Abstract Art. September the 16th - Jean Arp - Artist Birthday
Jean Arp French Born: September 16, 1886 Strasbourg, France Died: June 7, 1966 Basel, Switzerland Art Movement: Abstract Art, Dada, Surrealism Born in 1886, Hans Peter Wilhelm Arp (known as Jean Arp) was a French-German painter, sculptor, poet, pioneer of Abstract Art, and pivotal contributor to the shaping of Dadaism. He also played a crucial role in the development of Surrealism. 1912 Arp moved to Munich after studying at the Académie Julian in Paris. He met Kandinsky and was involved and exhibited with the ‘The Blue Rider’ German Expressionist group. Arp was known for his innovative approach to art, often incorporating chance and randomness into his creative process. He embraced the idea of "automatic" art, where he would allow spontaneous, uncontrolled elements to influence his work. Jean Arp decided to flee to Switzerland to avoid being drafted into the German forces after World War I started. When asked to come to the German consulate in Zurich, he would claim to be mentally insane by incorrectly attempting to solve an elaborate math equation. In 1916, alongside other notable artists like Tristan Tzara and Hugo Ball, Arp founded the Dada movement, which emerged in the early 20th century as a response to the horrors of World War I. “Dada aimed to destroy the rational deceptions of man and recover the natural and irrational order,’ said Jean Arp. Shortly after arriving in Zurich, he met Sophie Taeuber, a Swiss painter who became his wife and work partner for many years. One of Arp's most famous contributions to art was his creation of "chance collages." He would drop pieces of paper onto a surface and glue them where they fell, creating compositions that were partially dictated by chance. This technique challenged the notion of the artist's total control over their work. Throughout his career, Arp also produced sculptures characterized by organic, abstract forms, often inspired by natural shapes. His work in sculpture and painting significantly influenced the development of Surrealism, and he was associated with notable artists such as Max Ernst, Joan Miró, and André Breton. After World War II, Arp settled in France and continued to produce art and collaborate with other artists. Jean Arp passed away in Basel, Switzerland, on June 7, 1966. His work continues to be celebrated for its innovative and groundbreaking contributions to Modern Art. January the 15th - Giovanni Segantini - Artist Birthday
Giovanni Segantini Italian, Swiss Born: January 15, 1858 Arco, Italy Died: September 28, 1899 Pontresina, Switzerland Art Movement: Symbolism, Neo-Impressionism Giovanni Segantini was an Italian painter known for his colourful, symbolist landscapes and genre scenes. He was greatly influenced by the Art Nouveau movement and the works of the Pre-Raphaelites, and many of his paintings contained allegorical or symbolic elements. He often depicted the rugged beauty of the Alpine landscape, and he was particularly interested in the relationship between nature and humanity. Born in Arco, in the Trentino region of Italy, Segantini had a very harsh childhood. His older brother died in a fire the same year he was born. His father, Francesco Segantini, was a tradesman, often travelling to look for work. Her mother plunged into a deep depression after the death of his older brother; thus, young Giovanni was left alone in poverty, hunger and limited education. After the death of both parents in 1895, Giovanni was left under the tutelage of his older half-sister Irene. However, at age 7, he fled his hometown to live in the streets of Milan and had to subsist on his own from a very young age. As an orphan, he got placed in the Marchiondi Reformatory, where the instructors noticed his drawing abilities and encouraged him. Segantini started studying art classes at the Brera Academy in 1874, where he met artists from Scapigliatura, a kind of Bohemian movement that included artists, poets, writers and musicians who thrived on living art as life. In 1879 he met his friend Carlo Bugatti's sister Luigia Pierina, and they began a lifelong romance; due to his stateless status, he was unable to marry her legally, and they were forced to move from city to city to avoid repercussions and reprimands from the Catholic church very dominant at that time. Giovanni Segantini rose to fame when one of his paintings, Ave Maria, took a gold medal at the 1883 World's Fair in Amsterdam. This allowed him, in the 1880s, to move to Switzerland, where he entirely focused on painting and equally started to study philosophy. Segantini's works began to get attention at galleries and exhibitions throughout Europe, and commissioned projects of landscape paintings were made by nearby hotels. He needed to paint outdoors for this project, and he paced his work to finish the canvas, becoming sick by mid-September. Segantini died in 1899 at the age of 41 while working on a painting of the Swiss Alps. January the 13th - Chaïm Soutine - Artist Birthday
Chaïm Soutine Jewish, Belarusian, Russian Born: January 13, 1893 Smilavichy, Belarus Died: August 9, 1943 Paris, France Art Movement: Expressionism Chaïm Soutine was a Russian-born painter known for his expressive and emotional style of painting influenced by the Fauvist movement. Soutine was born in 1893 in Smilavichy, a small town in what is now Belarus. He was the tenth of eleven children in a Jewish family and grew up in poverty. From a young age, Soutine showed an aptitude for art and began taking art lessons as a teenager. In 1912, he enrolled at the Vilna Academy of Fine Arts, where he studied painting and drawing. After graduating from the Academy in 1913, Soutine moved to Paris to continue his studies. In Paris, Soutine became part of the vibrant art scene and joined a group of artists known as the School of Paris, which included such figures as Amedeo Modigliani and Pablo Picasso. Soutine's career began to take off in the 1920s when he gained the support of art dealers and collectors. He had his first solo exhibition in 1923, and his work was included in several important group exhibitions throughout the decade. Soutine's reputation continued to grow, and he became a respected and influential artist at the School of Paris. Despite this recognition, Soutine's career continued to be marked by financial struggles and he often lived in poverty and was known to take on odd jobs to make ends meet. He was also known to be prone to outbursts and mental health issues. He was sometimes ostracized by his peers, but he was also deeply respected by many of his contemporaries for his talent and dedication to his craft. During World War II, Paris was occupied by the German army, and the city's art scene was greatly impacted by the conflict. Many artists and collectors fled the city, and the art market was disrupted. Soutine was forced to hide to avoid getting arrested and live clandestinely. In the late years, Soutine was suffering from gastrointestinal bleeding and while in hiding he had an emergency surgery which led to complications. Chaïm Soutine died on 9 August 1943 at the age of 50 just a few days after the improvised surgery. Soutine's work was highly influential and helped to pave the way for the development of abstract expressionism. His works continue to be admired in museums and private collections around the world.
