Bierstadt was born in Prussia, now Germany, in 1830 and emigrated with his family to the United States as a child.


He later returned to Germany to study at the Düsseldorf Academy of Fine Arts under the famous landscape painter Andreas Achenbach. After completing his studies, Bierstadt travelled extensively throughout Europe, studying the works of other artists and learning new techniques.



Upon his return to the United States in the mid-1850s, Bierstadt began to focus on painting the landscape of the American West. He travelled throughout the region sketching and painting the mountains, forests, and valleys he encountered. His paintings are known for their grandeur and dramatic lighting, which helped convey the majesty and grandeur of the natural world.

Bierstadt was a member of the Hudson River School, a group of 19th-century American landscape painters known for their meticulous, realistic depictions of nature. His works were frequently exhibited and were very popular during his lifetime.

Bierstadt's legacy extends beyond his paintings and drawings.
